When we hear the term going on a “diet ” most people think of something terrible!
Maybe you’ve had a serious weight problem, or even an eating disorder. Maybe you’ve just had a negative experience that involved a lot of hard work with little results, or maybe even just the word diet has always had negative connotations, so you’ve never given it much thought until recently.
The mere mention of a “diet” kicks many of us into a “No way I’m going there” kind of a thought pattern, so let’s clarify the word. We need to be on the same page with how we are using it here so we can try to remove all of the negative connotations, and all conditioned responses that have been built into us around the word. As a matter of fact let’s change it altogether to what describes it better anyway. Let’s call this our new form of eating.
First of all, as a noun, diet simply means what you eat overall. Squirrels have a diet consisting mainly of nuts. A new form of eating may be if squirrels suddenly decided to start eating mainly fresh seafood. Now that doesn’t really make sense, but it makes as much sense as the way we are supposed to eat compared to the way that many of us eat.
As a verb it means a temporary restriction or alteration of what you eat. Such as going on diet or dieting.
The verb diet is the one that makes people with a history of dieting cringe. It can invoke negative thoughts, and even memories. It makes us think of limitations and sacrifice. We are going to focus on the word as a noun, because in order to be successful at changing your life for health reasons it needs to be just that; CHANGING YOUR LIFE!
We are not talking about going on a diet or dieting we are talking about changing our diet. A new form of eating that creates eating habits we consciously make in order to alter a health condition or to increase the span and quality of our life until it becomes “a way of life”.
Paleo, South Beach and Atkins are all types of diets, but they are still considered dieting and probably bring on those negative thoughts. Understanding weight gain, and reversing it, is really the only way you are ever going to get a grip on weight loss. The posts here on weight loss and nutrition, along with this knowledge will help you discern a lot of garbage ideas quickly. You can only balance your body’s weight and metabolism safely and long term by allowing it to adjust naturally. That can only happen by giving it the proper resources and time to do that.
My weight loss and nutrition program is designed to, not only help you lose weight, but educate you on nutrition and help you transition into your new way of life so seamlessly that old ways just don’t even make sense anymore. Let’s start that education now with just a little about how weight gain works.
Triglycerides are a giant component in weight gain because all the extra sugar in your blood is turned into them and stored in fat cells (adipose tissue). Triglycerides are composed of glycerol and three fatty acid chains that can easily be converted into energy, so they are valuable in metabolism. They can float in the blood as part to be delivered directly to cells for energy. If they are not needed, and the level in the blood becomes too high, they are stored in adipose tissue as fat. Another discussion will be about when they get so high in the blood that they start causing health problems like heart disease.
Triglycerides travel in your blood as part of a lipoprotein. Lipoproteins are used to transport fat (lipids) in the blood because blood is water based, and can’t dissolve. Lipoproteins are used like ferries in the blood for fats and other things like cholesterol. HDL and LDL are lipoproteins; that’s why you hear them called “good cholesterol” and “bad cholesterol”. In actuality the good cholesterol is the one that carries the bad stuff away for disposal, and the bad cholesterol is the one that keeps carrying new stuff to the cell, or not, because there’s already too much bad cholesterol, so it has to try to do something else to get rid of it. This can cause a build-up in your systems, which can show up in all different kinds of ways besides weight gain; like diabetes. So if you read about Intermittent Fasting last month you may remember that the key to all of the anti-aging, and life-extending benefits were due to a consistently low level of insulin and glucose in the blood. This would also imply a healthy regulation of triglycerides and lipoproteins, which over time should adjust to your body being able to go from using sugar for energy to easily switch to converting fat for energy.
This is the process our bodies were made for, but the fact is, high carb and high sugar foods are just too available to us. This has taught our bodies to wait for sugar and store fat. In a healthy metabolism there is little to no lag time in switching from burning sugar to burning fat. This is something we can teach our bodies to do over time, even though many of us have lived on a sugar and carb diet our entire lives.
That’s where hCG comes in. Many of you may have heard of something called the hCG diet, but remember, we are not going on a diet. We are making the way we eat a way of life with a new form of eating, so this may be different than what you have heard about hCG.
The fact is; it has been my experience, for more than 15 years now, with numerous patients of mine to agree with me; the hCG, along with a significantly reduced calorie diet, not only loses weight, it also helps to train your body to burn fat instead of waiting for more sugar. Now obviously the significantly reduced calorie diet alone will help you lose weight, and I am not going to debate what the hCG does or doesn’t do scientifically, but it does something. What it does is make the Caloric Restriction tolerable; even easy for some people. Without it it’s like starving yourself.
If you go back and read last month’s article about Caloric Restriction, and then watch the FDA’s video about hCG you will see that the FDA is very careful to emphasize Over The Counter (OTC) hCG, and if you watch the full video they will tell you the only safe way to use hCG is under the strict supervision of a doctor. They never say that hCGdoesn’t work under the care of a doctor, and they are careful to emphasize that the OTC hCG is illegal and ineffective. I won’t get into the practices of the FDA, but I do want to point out that the OTC hCG industry about which they are talking was completely unregulated and much of it was found to contain little to no actual hCG. It has been my experience and remains my very strong opinion that hCG works alongside of a CR/IF form of eating, to lose weight comfortably and safely, and most importantly, to help establish this new way of eating as a new way of life.
Call me or come in today to get started on your hCG plan. Even if you just have questions about hCG or any of the other things you’ve read on here please call and have your questions answered completely, competently, and confidentially.
